Matthew Snyder

Matthew is a pianist and sound engineer who studied music education and production in Ohio in the USA. He spent most of his time learning and playing at local Jazz clubs in Toledo. He came to the UK when he was 22. Since then he has lived in many places around the county getting a real taste for Britain, though he has always viewed Edinburgh as his home and cannot stay away for too long! He has co-organised and played in “The Colour of Music” in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at a venue on Dundas street.

He started his piano and production tutoring business “Square One Sound“ in 2011, and now continues to give jazz and improvisation lessons around Edinburgh. He views music as a language that anyone can speak, a universal way to communicate. He uses this concept when he plays and teaches. He teaches his students to play by feeling, to understand the emotional Impact of what and how they play. This leads to a very unique learning/listening experience that not only shows how you play, but also why. He believes that every performance should be unique and that you should let your personal feelings naturally impact how you play, and that this makes it much more real and intimate.

He is excited to be a part of this exhibition as it speaks to what he believes; that everyone should question everything, and that even if you don’t find answers, which you probably wont, the process of challenging and thinking is the process human evolution.
